MobileSoftwareUpdate — Update Brain Service

This is a background helper that Apple builds into macOS to handle the preparation phase of macOS software updates. When your Mac checks for or downloads an update, this helper assembles all the required pieces, verifies them, and decompresses the data so it is ready for the final installation step. It is a fully legitimate, Apple-owned part of the macOS update system — not third-party software.

When it runs hot
Running hot almost always means a macOS update is actively being downloaded or prepared in the background — either one you started manually or one triggered by automatic updates. On Macs with a T2 or Apple silicon chip, this work includes personalising and cryptographically verifying the update specifically for your machine, which takes extra processing time. If it stays busy for a long time without a visible update in progress, automatic background updates are the most likely cause.
Safety tier
Informational — Unknown, system-owned, or data-holding — explanation only, no action.
Safe action
none
Worst case
If this helper is stopped while a macOS update is being prepared, the update can fail, stall indefinitely, or disappear from the Software Update catalog — requiring the update process to be restarted from scratch.
