Apple Intelligence On-Device Inference Service

This is a background helper built into macOS Sequoia (15) that belongs entirely to Apple. It is the engine that runs Apple Intelligence tasks directly on your Mac — things like rewriting text in Mail, generating images, and powering Siri's smarter responses — without sending your data to a server. It lives inside your macOS system files and starts up automatically whenever Apple Intelligence is active.

When it runs hot
Apple Intelligence is actively working in the background — processing a request for Mail, Messages, Photos, or Siri, or quietly getting ready for an upcoming task. Sustained high activity usually means the feature has a large job underway or is initializing after a restart; it typically settles down on its own once the work is done.
Safety tier
Informational — Unknown, system-owned, or data-holding — explanation only, no action.
Safe action
none
Worst case
If it stays pegged for a long time, your Mac may run hot, the fan will spin loudly, and other apps can feel sluggish — but no data is at risk. Stopping it from outside forces macOS to restart it on its own, so the only lasting fix is to turn Apple Intelligence off in System Settings.
