Speedtest by Ookla

Speedtest by Ookla is a free internet speed-testing app made by Ookla and available on the Mac App Store. It lives in the macOS menu bar and lets you check your download speed, upload speed, ping, and connection stability with a single click, using Ookla's global network of servers. It keeps a history of past tests so you can track your connection over time, and it lets you share results via the built-in macOS share menu.

Speedtest — owned by Ookla.

When it runs hot
Speedtest actively transfers data to and from Ookla's servers while a test is running, so a brief spike in CPU or network activity is completely normal during that short window. If it is using a lot of resources when you are not actively running a test, the app may have been left open in the background or may be stuck mid-test.
Safety tier
Safe — User-owned and reversible — acting carries no real risk.
Safe action
quit
Worst case
No data is lost by closing the app — at most an in-progress test result is discarded.
